Questions

What is a Med Spa?

Medical Spas (Med Spas) provide treatments that require additional experience, training, and advanced certifications, and licenses.

For example, salons, day spas and medical spas all offer facials, cosmetic services, and skin care products. However, you can only obtain treatments with prescription, medical-grade products like neurotoxin or dermal fillers, and prescription skincare by a physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, or certified aesthetician.

Treatments such as these offer longer-lasting results than products that you can use at home on the surface of your skin, but they should only be administered by qualified professionals.

The services may cost a little more than you’ll find at your local salon or day spa, but the difference in quality, care, and outcomes is worth the investment. Choosing Best Self Aesthetics and Wellness for your anti-aging, beauty enhancing, and wellness treatments offers more attention to detail, reduced risk of side effects, and overall superior results.

How do I know if my aesthetician is qualified/certified?

To be able to provide the treatments that we offer in the state of Washington we must have a medical director and a licensed professional to provide the services. If you’re not sure, just ask us!

Any staff member at a reputable Med Spa should be happy to tell you about their qualifications and experience and show you their certifications. You are also able to look up any providers through their state licensing board.

Our owner is a very experienced Registered Nurse as well as a certified aesthetician in every service that we offer. Our medical director is a Nurse Practitioner with many years of experience in aesthetics.

Your safety is the most important thing. Wherever you may go for your treatments we strongly encourage you to find out this information.

Do you accept insurance?

No, we do not accept medical insurance. Though the treatments that we provide are medical in nature, they are primarily aesthetic and most importantly elective. Therefore, medical insurance would not cover our services and treatments.

Should I use dermal filler or a wrinkle relaxer (neurotoxin)?

The answer to this question depends on the results you are looking for. We have included some information about both treatments here but the best way to answer this question is to have a one-on-one consultation with your injector about your specific goals.

Although they are both injectable treatments that address some of the same issues, neurotoxins and dermal fillers work in different ways.

The filler products that we use are hyaluronic acid based which is produced by our bodies naturally. These fillers are injected under the skin and/or into the lips. Fillers are used in the face to add fullness to an area that has had volume loss giving a more contoured and youthful appearance as well as help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and creases. When injected into the lips, fillers can be used to plump, define, shape and hydrate.

Neurotoxin prevents muscle contraction, which relaxes the underlying muscle and results in a softening of the features by diminishing movement of the muscles treated. It can be used to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming or to decrease the appearance of those that you already have.

Will microneedling be painful?

We pretreat with a topical numbing cream applied to the area(s) that will be treated. This numbing cream is rubbed into the skin and allowed to sit and numb for a minimum of 20 minutes prior to the treatment starting. It is then wiped off in sections as that area is readied for treatment.

Most people only feel the pressure and vibration from the pen. This treatment is not always 100% pain free, but we do our best to alleviate as much discomfort as possible.

Are there any instructions for before my treatment?

Following is some basic information about the pre-treatment period, but please pay close attention to information for the specific treatment that you book.

To help minimize bruising risks before your treatment, you should avoid medications that can increase your bruise potential such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen (brand names Motrin and Advil), Aleve, Excedrin, fish oil, and Vitamin E for two weeks and avoid alcohol 48 hours prior to your injection.

Arnica Montana can be used five days prior to the procedure. Arnica Montana is a homeopathic supplement to help reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.

What about post-treatment?

Each treatment comes with its own set of specific post-treatment instructions that will be sent to you via email at the end of your appointment.

However, here are some basic recommendations:

  • Avoid touching the treatment area for the remainder of the day.

  • Ice can be applied throughout the day to help with swelling.

  • Acetaminophen (brand name Tylenol) can be taken as needed for soreness.

  • No makeup should be applied for 24 hours.

  • Avoid exercise for 24 hours to minimize swelling.

  • Avoid laying down, especially on your face for at least four hours.

  • Avoid any dental procedures for two to four weeks post injection treatments.

How much will I peel after a chemical peel?

This depends on which type of peel you choose.

Our Lite Refresh peel is known as the “Lunchtime Peel” because it has essentially no downtime and you should not expect any sheet peeling. Some clients come in for a Lite Refresh peel and go right back to their normal daily activities, including going back to work!

With use of the different peels from Perfect Derma you should expect sheet peeling to any of the skin treated. This peeling can last anywhere between 5-7 days with a rare number of patients seeing peeling up to 14 days.

The typical days to where you will experience the most intense peeling are days three and four. Always pay close attention to your post-care instructions for optimal peel and healing.
